Senate Passes Padilla, Butler Bill to Rename San Francisco Post Office After Late Senator Dianne Feinstein

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Laphonza Butler (both D-Calif.) announced that the Senate unanimously passed their bill to rename a San Francisco post office after the late California Senator and former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein. The “Dianne Feinstein Post Office” will be located at 180 Steuart Street on the ground level of the Rincon Center, off of the Embarcadero with a view of the Bay Bridge. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives.

As Mayor of San Francisco in the 1980s, Feinstein helped oversee the development of the Rincon Center. This complex includes the Rincon Annex, which served as San Francisco’s largest postal sorting and distribution center for several decades. Today, the Rincon Annex hosts a series of murals depicting San Francisco’s history and is listed as a San Francisco Designated Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.

“Senator Feinstein was a towering figure not just in modern California politics, but in the history of our state and our nation,” said Senator Padilla. “It is only fitting that the Senate came together to celebrate her memory by dedicating an institution essential to a functioning and fair democracy in her name.”

“Senator Feinstein was a trailblazer and dedicated public servant who spent decades working on behalf of the people of California. It has been a tremendous honor over these last fourteen months to carry on her legacy, and I am proud that today we have taken another step to memorialize her by renaming the 180 Steuart Street post office in her honor,” said Senator Butler. “It seems like a fitting tribute to Senator Feinstein in the city that she loved and called home for so many years.”

Following Senator Feinstein’s passing, Senator Padilla and his colleagues unanimously passed a resolution to honor her life and legacy, adjourning the Senate to allow members to travel to her funeral services out of respect. The resolution recognized Senator Feinstein as the longest serving Senator to represent California and the longest serving female Senator in the history of the United States. In September, the Senate unanimously passed Padilla and Butler’s bill to rename San Francisco’s 50 United Nations Plaza Federal Building as the “Senator Dianne Feinstein Federal Building.” Padilla and Butler also introduced a bill to rename a Joshua Tree Visitor Center after the late Senator, which recently advanced out of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
