Padilla Statement on Speaker Pelosi Stepping Down From House Leadership
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) issued the following statement after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced she would be stepping down as Speaker after almost 20 years in leadership and four non-consecutive terms as Speaker in the U.S. House of Representatives:
“Our nation is more resilient today and the pillars of our democracy are more secure because of the historic and trailblazing service of Speaker Nancy Pelosi. As the first woman and first Californian to ever serve as Speaker of the House, she’s redefined American leadership for future generations and served as an inspiration for young women around the world.
“Speaker Pelosi has put Californians and the American people at the heart of her service. Since her election to Congress in 1987, she has spearheaded landmark legislation that fundamentally improved the quality of life for all Americans, and Californians will never forget the historic progress she delivered for our state. From securing affordable health care that made quality care a reality for millions of Americans, to improving the lives of same-sex couples and fighting for the LGBTQ community, to the millions of jobs she’s helped create for families over three decades—we are forever grateful.
“Speaker Pelosi’s perseverance and commitment to unity has served as a source of strength both at home and abroad in the face of extremist attempts to harm our democracy, our nation’s Capitol, and even her own family. As Speaker Pelosi enters this new chapter in her life, we enter a new era of American government—one that has been molded by her unparalleled ability to lead our country through some of its darkest moments.
“I look forward to continue serving alongside my friend and colleague from California and witnessing her legacy in action for years to come.”
