Padilla Statement on Anniversary of January 6th Insurrection

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On the four-year anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration with oversight over federal elections, issued the following statement ahead of the Congressional certification of the 2024 election results:

“Four years ago, insurrectionists stormed our nation’s Capitol in an unprecedented attempt to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. Incited by the Big Lie — a coordinated campaign led by former President Trump to cast doubt on the outcome of our democratic elections — the deadly January 6th attack remains a stain on American history. Thanks to the resilience of our institutions and the bravery of U.S. Capitol Police officers who risked their lives, this assault on our democracy failed. Yet, attacks on the right to vote and the very foundation of our democracy persist.

“Today, Congress will continue America’s historic tradition of ensuring a peaceful transfer of power. For over 200 years before the January 6th, 2021 insurrection, this cornerstone of our democracy stood strong. Now, we must work to restore and safeguard this tradition for future generations. I swore an oath to serve California and uphold the Constitution of the United States, and I will defend our democracy and ensure it endures for generations to come.”
