Padilla Condemns Supreme Court Decision Eviscerating Abortion Rights
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision last night in Whole Woman’s Health v. Jackson.
“Late last night, the Supreme Court’s five most conservative justices eviscerated abortion access for millions of Americans. With an unsigned, single-paragraph order, they flouted nearly half a century of precedent and the clear consensus of the American people. This dangerous decision will destroy the guarantee of Roe v. Wade and open the door for state legislatures to violate other constitutional precedents while evading review by the courts.
“Abortion access is essential health care. Because of five conservative justices on the Supreme Court, millions of Americans will lose the right to make their own medical decisions. I call on my colleagues to immediately pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and re-establish the right to abortion care nationwide.”
Senator Padilla is a cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, a bill that would guarantee access to and the right to provide abortion services in the United States.
