Padilla Calls on Congress to Codify Abortion Rights

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement after the Supreme Court’s oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

“Reproductive rights are fundamental rights. Millions of Americans depend on abortion care to protect their health and determine the course of their own lives. And yet, those rights are currently secured only by the Supreme Court’s commitment to precedent—a commitment that several justices signaled today that they are all too ready to discard. I call on my colleagues in Congress to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and enshrine this fundamental right in federal law.”

Senator Padilla is a cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, a bill that would guarantee access and the right to provide abortion services in the United States.
