Padilla Bills to Rename San Francisco Federal Building and Post Office After Late Senator Dianne Feinstein Head to President Biden’s Desk

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) announced that his bills to rename a San Francisco federal building and post office after the late California Senator and former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein passed in the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively. Both bills will now head to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law.

The “Senator Dianne Feinstein Federal Building” will be located at San Francisco’s 50 United Nations Plaza, and the “Dianne Feinstein Post Office” will be located at 180 Steuart Street on the ground level of the Rincon Center, off the Embarcadero with a view of the Bay Bridge. Former California Senator Laphonza Butler co-led both bills.

“Senator Feinstein was a towering figure not just in modern California politics, but in the history of our state and our nation,” said Senator Padilla. “Dedicating these San Francisco institutions essential to a functioning and fair democracy in her name is a fitting tribute to her legacy of public service and her lifelong dedication to her beloved San Francisco. I look forward to President Biden promptly signing these bills into law to honor her barrier-breaking career.”

The six-story, 350,000-square-foot building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is home to the U.S. General Services Administration’s regional headquarters for the Pacific Rim Region. It was constructed in 1936 and renovated in 2013 to upgrade building systems, restore historically significant interiors and the central courtyard, and redesign office workspace.

Dianne Feinstein Post Office

As Mayor of San Francisco in the 1980s, Feinstein helped oversee the development of the Rincon Center. This complex includes the Rincon Annex, which served as San Francisco’s largest postal sorting and distribution center for several decades. Today, the Rincon Annex hosts a series of murals depicting San Francisco’s history and is listed as a San Francisco Designated Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.

Following Senator Feinstein’s passing, Senator Padilla and his colleagues unanimously passed a resolution to honor her life and legacy, adjourning the Senate to allow members to travel to her funeral services out of respect. The resolution recognized Senator Feinstein as the longest serving Senator to represent California and the longest serving female Senator in the history of the United States. Padilla and Butler also introduced a bill to rename a Joshua Tree Visitor Center after the late Senator, which advanced out of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
