Padilla Statement on President Biden’s State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) released the following statement after President Biden delivered his second State of the Union Address:
“Nearly two years ago, President Biden stood before a nation burdened by the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis to deliver his first address to a joint session of Congress. Today, thanks to President Biden’s leadership and the work of Democrats in Congress, the state of our union looks much brighter. Americans have returned to work, with the economy adding 12 million new jobs and reaching record low unemployment levels. From cutting health care costs for families to investing in our nation’s infrastructure and stepping up to combat climate change and high drug prices, we made historic progress.
“But Americans know there is more work to do. They’re united in their hope for overwhelmingly popular policies like the child tax credit that gives families more room to breathe, protecting the promise of Social Security and Medicare, immigration reform, support for mental health resources that can save lives, and laws that protect the fundamental right of a woman to make decisions about her own body. And they’re demanding we pass common-sense gun safety bills that can help prevent the next tragedy. It was my honor to have Councilmember Henry Lo, who led his community of Monterey Park through the tragic recent mass shooting as Mayor, with me tonight to demand action — so that no mayor, neighbor, or family member ever has to experience the heartbreak of gun violence again.
“There’s no question that our nation is stronger due to President Biden’s leadership. What it will look like in two more years will depend on our willingness to stand up for the American Dream — and Republicans’ willingness to listen to the American people. Let’s reject partisan gridlock and deliver for them.”
